Milan trend report 2026: Grounded Comfort as a response to turbulent times.

Milan's Salone del Mobile and EuroCucina are a key indicator of trends in the international interior design industry. The items on display shape conversations about kitchens, living spaces, materials and comfort long after the trade fair week has ended. In the latest GRASS Milan trend report, GRASS summarises the main observations from the exhibition stands and showrooms and identifies one core theme for 2026: Grounded Comfort.

The fourth edition of the GRASS trend report has been published and is available in full at: www.grass-trends.com. Its aim is to provide customers, partners and industry enthusiasts with inspiration and guidance, along with an editorial view of developments in international furniture design. For the latest report, an editorial team consisting of Andreas Marosch, Head of Marketing at GRASS, Andrea Ferrin, GRASS Italia, photographer Jens Ellensohn and Martin Schaefer, Senior Editor at GOOS COMMUNICATION, headed to Milan to visit the trade fair and numerous showrooms across the city.

"Milan is a must for anyone wanting an overview of what is happening in the interior design industry", says Andreas Marosch. "It is important for us not only to keep an eye on our own products, but also to understand the social and design context in which furniture, kitchens and living spaces are being developed. With this trend report, we are giving our customers ideas for the long-term". At the heart of the current report is the observation that the Playful Diversity of 2022 has evolved. At that time, the trade fair was defined by its enormous variety of styles, colours and shapes. In 2026, things appear much calmer, more grounded and more reserved. The colours are more natural, the surfaces more matt, the shapes softer, the materials more tactile. Playful Diversity has transformed into a desire for cosiness, consistency and precision: GRASS calls it Grounded Comfort.

Grounded Comfort: More a feeling than a style

Grounded Comfort does not describe a specific style, but rather a feeling. In these times of uncertainty, the home is becoming even more pivotal as a place of peace, safety and reliability. At the same time, many customers are less willing to invest. In the face of this contradiction, the furniture industry is not responding with loud temptation, but with the promise of quality, durability and comfort. The kitchen is increasingly considered part of a domestic ecosystem: a living space, meeting place, storage space, stage and haven all in one. The trend report shows how this development is expressed in several subtrends: for example, Muted Earth, which describes the new colour scheme of beige, brown, black, taupe and matt metals, or Soft Geometry, which uses curves, recesses and broken cubes to soften the edges of interior design. The Inner Standard subtrend is particularly relevant for GRASS. The more subtle the exterior design becomes, the more important the feel of the product becomes - how it opens and closes, how it stores items and how it feels in everyday use.

Large drawers, glass frames, coordinated interior mechanisms, light in the cabinet, accurate joints and smooth movements all become signs of quality. True luxury does not always start with the surface, but lies within the furniture.

The design revolution has not yet arrived

The GRASS Milan trend report 2026 combines trade fair observations, photography, interviews and editorial classifications to provide an inspiring overview of the most important developments in the interior design industry. It shows that, like previous years, the big design revolution did not materialise in 2026. But this in itself is the message. Furniture is not growing louder, but more personal. Not more spectacular, but more detailed. And the home is becoming a place where design performs its most important task - creating a good feeling.
